haha yeah, theres… a lot of meta out there abt this. the obvious out of universe reason could be the writers just… fudging things for their message lol.
‘story’ wise one view that’s interesting (story wise as in like… thematically? and a little ‘in universe’) is to look at it more like, this isn’t just another part of a war, this isn’t just aang vs ozai, it’s The Avatar vs The Firelord, with all the symbolic weight those symbols bring. and does aang as The Avatar have the right to kill the leader of a nation to solve a larger conflict? to punish? kyoshi as The Avatar sure decided she did, and that worked for her and her time.
but aang as The Avatar decided against that, because this isn’t just about ending the war, it’s about sending a message to every nation about the kind of world Aang The Avatar will create after he ends the war. and this world will Not be one of violence, will Not be one where justice is equivalent to death and cruelty.
Aang, out of nowhere: I can't kill Ozai. It's against the monk's code. :( I need to go on a spiritual journey on a tiger rock.
Also Aang through book 1-book 3 until the last episode at any given opportunity:
#and also since ozai doesnt die he won’t be made a martyr#i wrote this all out and am now unsure abt my meta#this is a very GFFA inspired take so outside the context of reading her meta idk how much sense this makes#especially since like#in universe its very much presented as an aang doesnt want to kill thing#and maybe doesnt support this#but if u peel a layer off that i think you could reach this conclusion#that aangs hesitance is less of like ‘oh no i have to kill a person’ and more of ‘should i as The Avatar kill this figurehead?’#‘what message would that send?’#to a war torn world putting his foot down and resolving this without killing ozai sends such a strong signal of the kind of world aang wants#to create after the war#lol anyways thats just how i try to conceptualize it#thx for reading my rambling and sorry for sabotaging your post threads#i like meta even if its a lot to write sometimes
